I understand that it can be difficult to set aside time in your life for self-care. Journaling is a simple self-care habit that can elevate your life in as little as five minutes a day—so no excuses!  Everyone has five minutes to spare. 

Each time you complete a happiness journal prompt, you should start experiencing the deep joy that comes from taking action to raise your happiness levels. You’ll start seeing improvements in your mood and well-being.

Benefits of Journaling: Why Writing About Joy Brings More Joy to Your Life

Journaling brings more clarity to your life. Writing about things that stir positive emotions from the past allows you to re-experience those positive emotions in the present. 

Journaling is also an excellent tool for self-discovery and self-awareness, which is key to understanding the drivers of joy for you.   Note that I said “for you” – not everyone shares the same joy drivers.  

Frankly, most of us really aren’t that clear about what drives our happiness.  We understand the things that bring us pleasure and make us smile—but often, those things bring only temporary satisfaction to our lives.  Most of us aren’t crystal clear on what the true drivers of lasting happiness are for us —and again, those drivers are different for just about everyone.

That’s why journaling is so effective:  instead of just reading about what brings you joy and how to live a happier life, you participate in uncovering what you need to do to live a more joyful life.

How to Get Started Journaling

Since we’re providing the journal prompts for you, now all you need to get started with journaling is a pen and paper—or a computer with word processing software (Google Docs is free!). Heck, you can even journal on your phone using a notepad app. 

Confession time: I like to journal in a pretty journal book—I’ve pictured a few of my favorites below.  Frankly, these aren’t necessary; using a pretty journal book is just something that brings a little extra joy to my journaling time.  

Just do what works for you—what’s most important is that you start your journaling journey!.

31 Happiness Journal Prompts: Be Much Happier in Just a Month!

 

  1. What does it FEEL like to be joyful?  Describe how the sensation of joy shows up in your life. 
  2. Describe a risk you took that changed your life for the better.
  3. Create a list of things you believe would help you experience more happiness in your life.
  4. Is there anything about the way you live that promotes or detracts from your experience of joy?  Describe the “joy promoters” and the “joy detractors” in your life.
  5. Describe a time when you felt deeply appreciative of everything around you.
  6. Who or what makes you most joyful, and why?
  7. How would others in your life know when you need a boost of happiness? Do you need to do something so they know? Or do they need to ask more questions, pay closer attention, take more time with you (or something else)?
  8. What modern invention or piece of technology do you appreciate the most?  Why?  How does it make your life happier?
  9. Finish this sentence:  “When I think of happiness, I think about _______.”  Create a long list, then pick two or three that matter most.
  10. What is a lesson about happiness you’ve learned that you want to pass on to others?
  11. What’s your very favorite gift you’ve ever GIVEN to someone else?  Who did you give it to?  Why was it your favorite?
  12. Describe the last time you shared a day or night with others (could be just one person or multiple people)  that was extremely enjoyable.  Who was there?  Why did it bring you happiness?  
  13. What are your favorite things to do that put you in an upbeat mood?
  14. Finish this sentence:  “When I think of contentment and inner peace for me and my life, I think about _______.”  
  15. Write about a happy childhood memory. Describe it in detail.
  16. What are some of your favorite simple pleasures in life? Make the longest list you can in 15 minutes or less.
  17. Create a list of movies, books, and/or shows you love.  Go back through the list and, one by one, explain why they make you so happy.
  18. Describe an outfit you wore as a child that brings back fond memories.  What did it look like?  Where did you wear it?  Did someone give it to you?  How old were you? Give as much detail about it as you recall.
  19. Think about a time you were unhappy in life. What turned around for you so that you could be happier again? 
  20. If you knew you could not fail, what goals would you set for yourself to increase your happiness?
  21. Write about an experience that you thought was negative at the time, but that turned out to be a good thing.
  22. Describe the most beautiful thing you saw in the last few days.  Go into detail. 
  23. Think back on a really wonderful day you had. What happened?  Why is that day so memorable?
  24. There’s some good in every day. What’s really great about today?  
  25. Think about someone who you don’t like but need to be around sometimes.  Name three positive traits about that person and one kind wish that you have for that person.  (Repeat this exercise if there are multiple “problem” people you’d rather avoid in your life.)
  26. What’s your favorite time of year?  Describe everything you like about it.
  27. Write a letter to someone you’re fond of that you haven’t spoken to in a while.  Tell them how much you appreciate them.  Extra credit:  write to them or call them and share what you’ve written.
  28. You have a full day that you can devote to relaxation, and your budget is $500.  What are you going to do? Will anyone be there with you?  In what ways do you imagine that this day will add to your happiness?
  29. What’s your favorite song?  Who sings it?  Listen to it now (It’s probably on YouTube if you don’t own a copy.)  How did listening to that song impact your mood?  Did the song bring back any fond memories for you? If so, explain.
  30. Think of one person that you’re in awe of (it can be someone you know personally or just admire from afar). Why are you inspired by this person?  What attributes do they have that you’d like to have?
  31. List five highlights of this past year.  Describe them in detail.  Recount how they brought happiness and joy into your life.

YAY You!
